Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo is one of only 12 players to have made over 150 appearances in UEFA’s club competitions.

All-time UEFA club competition appearances*
177: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid, Porto)
174: Paolo Maldini (AC Milan)
173: Xavi Hernández (Barcelona)
163: Pepe Reina (Barcelona, Villarreal, Liverpool, Napoli, Bayern München)
163: Clarence Seedorf (Ajax, Real Madrid, Internazionale Milano, AC Milan)
161: Raúl González (Real Madrid, Schalke)
160: Javier Zanetti (Internazionale Milano)
159: Ryan Giggs (Manchester United)
156: Gianluigi Buffon (Parma, Juventus)
154: Cristiano Ronaldo (Sporting CP, Manchester United, Real Madrid)
150: Dani Alves (Sevilla, Barcelona, Juventus, Paris)
150: Jamie Carragher (Liverpool)

Ronaldo reached the landmark figure in September 2017, just over 15 years after his first appearance, a UEFA Champions League qualifier for Sporting CP in August 2002.

Top of the pile is Iker Casillas, who also made the majority of his UEFA club appearances for Real Madrid but is now turning out for Porto.

Watch Ronaldo’s century of European goals

The top 12 is made up of three goalkeepers, four defenders, three midfielders and two forwards. The other striker to feature is Raúl González, himself a long-time talismanic figure at the Santiago Bernabéu whose final season in the Spanish capital (2009/10) crossed over with Ronaldo’s first.

Should Madrid go all the way to the 2017/18 final and Ronaldo feature in every game, he would finish the season on 161 appearances. Indeed even accounting for possible qualifiers and UEFA Super Cup games, it seems unlikely that Ronaldo would be able to catch Casillas – who can still add to his tally, after all – until the 2019/20 campaign at the earliest.

*UEFA club competitions means European Champion Clubs’ Cup/UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League, European/South American Cup, UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, UEFA Super Cup and UEFA Intertoto Cup
